The fire that burnt the Mbare Musika Retail Market last week, destroying property worth US$5 million, started from a small fire negligently lit by a security guard across the road near an entrance to keep himself warm.
A Mbare Magistrates Court yesterday remanded Action Chakauya (35) on charges of negligently causing serious damage to property. Chakauya worked as a security guard at the premises opposite the market.
On the evening of Tuesday last week, Chakauya was manning the premises opposite when he set a fire near one of the main entrances to warm himself.
He lost control of the fire which razed the whole market. Police investigations led to his arrest and he was charged under Section 141 of the criminal code.
President Mnangagwa has already intervened, declaring the Mbare inferno a state of disaster with all modalities now in place for the upgrade of the market and assisting traders with restocking.
Some of the traders have managed to restock and are already selling after rebuilding their stalls.
