Security guard jailed for stealing employer’s haulage truck

Dunmore Katapa was caught when the vehicle got stuck in the mud in Epworth.
Katapa (30) was convicted on his own plea of guilty to theft charges when he appeared before regional magistrate Mr William Bhila. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment but two years were suspended on condition he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Prosecutor, Mrs Varelie Ngoma, told the court that Central African Batteries Company employed Katapa as a security guard.
On January 1 this year, Katapa was on duty at the company’s premises at number 28 Telford Road, Graniteside in Harare when he stole a freightliner vehicle registration number AAS5592 and engine number 3468224.

He drove the haulage truck towards Epworth where it got stuck in the mud. People who saw Katapa struggling to remove the haulage head from the mud got suspicious and called the police, leading to Katapa’s arrest.
