THE long arm of the law finally caught up with a habitual armed robber who shot and killed a security guard at St Augustine’s High School in Penhalonga in 2021.

Abisha Moyo (26) recently appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Perseverance Makala, facing murder charges.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to September 8.

Mr Talent Nyamuzuwe prosecuted.

It is alleged that on December 9, 2021, Moyo and his accomplice Simbarashe Moyo who is still at large went to St Augustine’s High School to steal.

“They were armed with a firearm. The now deceased Mr Gift Munzvandi who was guarding the premises confronted the pair.

“Moyo produced a firearm and shot Mr Munzvandi once on the back of the right thigh. Mr Munzvandi died on his way to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

Witnesses saw the accused person and his accomplice running away after shooting Mr Munzvandi.

“Upon being arrested, Moyo voluntarily led the police to the crime scene and made positive indications on how he had committed the offence,” said Mr Nyamuzuwe.

Mr Nyamuzuwe said Moyo had stolen the firearm from his previous employer. However, the firearm is yet to be recovered.

The post-mortem carried out on Mr Munzvandi concluded that his death was caused by hypovolemic shock, which is an emergency condition in which severe blood makes it impossible for the heart to pump enough blood to the body.

Bail was opposed, with the State arguing that Moyo has previous convictions of thefts committed in Harare and Gweru.

“Chances are very high that he may abscond or tamper with evidence if granted bail. He has no known physical address, and was on the run since the commission of the offence. He also defaulted a community service sentence in Harare.

“Moyo knows where most of the witnesses reside in Penhalonga. If the accused person is granted bail, chances are high that he may interfere with witnesses.

“Investigations are also still in progress, while his accomplice is still at large,” said Mr Nyamuzuwe.
