RETIRED Security Mills workers in Bulawayo are appealing to the Government to assist them resolve a pension fund row with Old Mutual.

In an interview after a meeting of the pensioners in Bulawayo yesterday, former Security Mills Workers Committee secretary Mr Herbert Shumba said they were appealing to the Government to assist them access their pension as they were now living in abject poverty.

“We are appealing to the Government to continue assisting us with resolving our pension funds which was invested in Old Mutual through the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1999 estimated at US$238 000. We once reported the issue to the Government and an agreement was made where Old Mutual agreed to pay but now they seem to be reluctant. Only 100 pensioners out of 900 were paid sums ranging from $16 to $100. We want to know how much and what percentage in interest each pensioner is supposed to get,” said Mr Shumba.

The situation has been worsened after their former employer, Security Mills has also failed to honour retirement packages.
