Seel Africa wins Masvingo Road to Fame contest

Ten groups that were competing put up exceptional performances to make the competition a stiff one and judges had a tough time in coming up with the winners.

But like in any other competition there is always a winner and Zaka-based Afro-jazz outfit Seel Africa shocked many when they scooped the first prize of US$1 000 which also translates to an automatic qualification for the national finals to be held at Glamis Stadium in Harare on September 17.

The group proved that the best can also come out of remote areas which in most cases are looked down upon and are often shunned by music promoters.
Seel Africa surprised many with a polished act that saw them unleashing songs about cultural preservation, Unhu/ Ubuntu among other social issues.

On second place was the group Rumwanda from Masvingo who walked away with US$500 for their sungura catalogue of songs, while Maffives Combination pocketed US$35O for emerging third.
2004 Masvingo winners of the Chibuku Road to Fame, Zano Rangu entertained the crowd when they featured as guest performers.

Festival organisers Delta Beverages commended the level of talent exhibited by artistes in the province, urging other provinces to take a leaf from Masvingo.
“We were impressed by the level of commitment that all the groups showed and this made it one of the provincial finals with the highest level of competition.

“We hope that when we go to other provinces they will do the same because we want the national finals to live up to their billing,” Patricia Murambinda, Delta Beverages’ marketing and communications manager, said.

From Masvingo, the festival goes to Mashonaland Central Province this Satur-day where a total of 10 groups are expected to battle it in Mvurwi.
Harare Province held its competition at Machipisa Bar in Highfield a fortnight ago that saw talented afro-fusion musician John Pfumojena and his Munandi Band emerging as winners.

Chibuku Road to Fame was launched in 2001 by the National Arts of Zimbabwe in collaboration with Delta Beverages.
It is aimed at promoting young aspiring musicians to realise their dreams.

The event also gives the young artistes a chance to interact with established musicians as well as assisting them in recording their music.
Chibuku Road to Fame has seen music groups achieving their dream through the exposure that the platform offers to them.
