POLICE have cleared the kombi drivers, who were using the Seke Road flyover as a pick-up point, to help the smooth flow of traffic on one of the city’s major roads.
The kombis were blocking traffic along Seke Road.
Police have been concerned by traffic jams caused by motorists diverting from their traditional routes, especially Seke Road, to avoid congestion during peak hours.
Officer Commanding Harare Traffic, Superintendent Cledwin Madzore, said a number of motorists, who are supposed to use Seke Road, have been diverting to Chiremba Road.
“Seke Road is wide for the smooth flow of traffic when motorists observe road rules and regulations as well as respect each other and officers directing traffic there.
“We are informing motorists that police have deployed enough officers to oversee the smooth flow of traffic along Seke Road by clearing kombi drivers who used to disturb traffic at the flyover.
“Police have been attending to a number of road traffic accidents along Chiremba Road during peak hours.
“Of concern are that most of the motorists are either from Waterfalls or Chitungwiza but are taking that direction to avoid a traffic jam along Seke Road.
“Most of the accidents are minor damages to vehicles as motorists rush and squeeze each other on the narrow Chiremba Road.”
He said traffic police would be on the road to direct traffic to avoid congestion.
Congesting narrow roads exposed motorists to smash-and-grab attacks as traffic would be virtually at a standstill.
“We are urging motorists to avoid creating another lane.
“Police will not hesitate to enforce the appropriate law against unruly elements,” said Supt Madzore.
