Self-taught artist dreams big

Hailing from Dzivaresekwa in Harare, he has become a figure to reckon with in the arts sector.
Drawing his inspiration from wildlife painter Hillary Norton, Chimutuwah is unswerving in enriching art in the country and abroad.
A final-year student at Chinhoyi University, studying for a fine art degree, Chimutuwah believes he has got what it takes to be a good artist.
“I have been practising art for the past 12 years and I later realised the need to further my knowledge and that is why I enlisted with the university,” he said.
Chimutuwah’s vast experience encompasses graphic designing, illustration and photography.
“I can measure things through children’s thinking, the way they behave and this has, somehow strengthened my theme,” said Chimutuwah.
Through dedication and hard work, Chimutuwah has created a big name for himself.
To date, Chimutuwah has won a number of awards and the most recent being the Nama 2012 accolade for his of his scintillating piece — “Limitless Diversity” — where he equates it God’s power that works wonders without disapproval. He also scooped an award at Delta Gallery with “Redemption”, a fine piece portraying a young boy possessed by a demon and is in dire need of redemption.
Another of his famous works includes — “Cradle” — a woman holding her baby.
The artist encourages other artists to be versatile and go to school to further and learn new trades in the industry.
“Due to lower demand of art in the country, which many view as luxury, upcoming artists should know different skills, attend school and many exhibitions to keep abreast with new technology,” he said.
To date, Chimutuwah’s best solo project was “Let the Children Play” in 2009.
He started doing solo shows in 2005 and last year he appeared at Hifa with “Beyond Borders”.
Currently, he is working on an illustrative guide painting book and plans are afoot to open his own gallery.
