FOR the past five years, Xtratime Entertainment and Mukuru.com have collaborated to host the Mukuru Tuku Concerts and despite the passing on of the legendary artiste, the organisers intend to keep the legacy alive.
Selmor and Sandra Mtukudzi have been roped in to fill in for their late father at this year’s edition which has been dubbed the “Selmor Mtukudzi & Friends Legacy Tour”.
The tour will kick off at the Boksburg Hotel in Johannesburg on September 27 and will wrap up at the Mercury Live Concert Venue in Cape Town the following day.
An array of other talented artistes including Nox Guni, Mae Sithole, Takamia, DJ Wilson and DJ Smashy will also take to the stage during this tour.
Two of Tuku’s original band members Picky Kasamba and Never Mpofu will also be part of the action, adding more weight to an already promising fete.
Tongai Mbidzo, of Xtratime Entertainment, said this was not a tribute gig but a continuation of the journey they started five years ago.
“This will not be a tribute concert but rather a continuation of a legacy. We are continuing a journey we started with Tuku five years ago, that of entertaining Zimbabweans in South Africa,” said Mbidzo.
He added: “The aim of this tour is to bring quality Zimbabwean entertainment to Johannesburg and Cape Town residents thereby playing a part in community interaction through arts and culture. It is also a great platform for Zimbabweans living in South Africa to socialise and exchange positive ideas.”
He added that bringing on Selmor to headline the two concerts was a no-brainer considering the talent she has and the fact that many people have embraced her as her Tuku’s successor on the music scene.
“Selmor has been doing really well on her own and of late she has incorporated a lot of her father’s music into her playlist as a way to continue Tuku’s legacy and continue the musical journey he had established across the globe.
“Selmor and Sandra have received a good response in most major cities in Zimbabwe and they are also becoming popular to South African music fans.”
