A 63-year-old Harare man yesterday appeared in court for raping his 13-year-old niece during his wife’s absence.

The senior citizen was facing two counts of rape and indecent assault when he appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe. He was remanded in custody and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Allegations are that on an unknown date in April this year, the complainant was in her bedroom packing clothes when the accused entered and started fondling her breasts. The court heard that the accused proceeded to remove the complainant’s clothes and raped her.

It is further alleged that in June this year, the complainant arrived from school and entered into her bedroom and closed the door. It is alleged that the accused followed the complainant into her bedroom and hugged her. He started fondling her breasts and went on to rape her.

The court heard that during that same month, the accused met the complainant in the kitchen and fondled her breasts.

The matter was later reported to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest.
