Senior citizen battered at rally

chair for Ward One in Masvingo urban was allegedly assaulted by a colleague in Mucheke suburb during heated verbal exchanges between supporters of rival candidates angling for the Masvingo Urban parliamentary seat.

Ms Murambiwa was allegedly slapped and elbowed by Francis Jiwa (30), the MDC-T youth leader in Ward 2 who accused her of supporting incumbent Masvingo Urban legislator Mr Tongai Matutu.

Jiwa allegedly backs Masvingo city council employee Mr Bernard Mazarire who wants to challenge Mr Matutu in the party’s primary elections whose date has not yet been announced.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero yesterday said they had arrested an MDC-T youth leader in Mucheke for assaulting a fellow party leader following a misunderstanding at a party meeting.

Inspector Zhanero said investigations into the case were continuing.
