‘Senior Lecturer’, ‘The Headmaster’ collide

Dubbed “The Headmaster Meets The Senior Lecturer”, the gig marked Madzibaba’s first performance at the joint where he shared the stage with jazz maestro Bob Nyabinde who was also fired up for the occasion. Jazz 105 normally hosts only two sungura artistes — Alick Macheso and Suluman Chimbetu — but this time they broadened their spectrum to include the Senior Lecturer. Madzibaba was not bothered by the fact that he was playing for a predominantly jazz audience and instead used the gig to win hearts of many.

The fiery left-handed lead guitarist had the audience on their feet with his all-time classics like “Mabvi Nemagokora”, “Mazano” as well as his reggae tracks, most of which were sing-along tunes to the revellers.

His dancers, popularly known as the “Stork Birds”, also put up an impressive act with their engrossing dances that endeared them with fans.

He indeed lived up to his moniker as the Senior Lecturer when he proved to all and sundry that he surely knows his thing.

Young musicians who were part of the crowd learnt a thing or two from the veteran musician, who has been in the industry for more than two decades and has a string of albums to his name.

Not to be outdone was Bob Nyabinde or simply “The Headmaster” in jazz circles, who proved to many why he deserves that title — despite having retired as a school headmaster — because of his talent both on the microphone and the guitar.

Like Madzibaba, Nyabinde has been in music for a long time and has many hit songs to his credit such as “Chabuda Hapana”, among others which have endeared him with many people.

This was not his first outing at Jazz 105, having played there before and the venue has become almost like his backyard.

Jazz 105 manager, Yasin Dala, said they were happy to work with Madzibaba and hoped to work with him again for other shows.
