A SERIAL killer who is believed to have committed approximately 20 cases of murder in and around Masvingo Province was on Friday arrested at Lulu Mine in Shurugwi following a tip-off.
The suspect, George Mashiri was arrested after police got a tip off from artisanal miners while working at one of the shafts at the mine. It is understood that Mashiri who was on the run after allegedly committing a series of murder offences accompanied by robbery had found sanctuary at the mine.
However, luck ran out for him when one of the artisanal miners who was privy to his heinous shenanigans identified him after he had inappropriately blasted one of the shafts raising eyebrows that he was one of the trained miners.
The miner then informed police CID homicide Masvingo who with the assistance of Shurugwi police waylaid him and apprehended him while he was in the company of a female partner.
It is understood that police also recovered guns. Lulu Mine supervisor, Mr Timothy Mukwana confirmed that Mashiri was arrested at Lulu Mine.
“I can confirm that there was a man suspected to have been on the run after committing several murder cases who was arrested at the mine on Friday. What happened is we have certain rules of how people use explosives at the mine. Mashiri mishandled explosives while working at one of the shafts at the mine and we took him for questioning. It was during the interrogation that one of the miners identified him as a murder suspect who was on the run. Police were informed and he was arrested,” he said.
National Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi could neither deny nor confirm the matter.
“I am not aware of the matter. However, I will get hold of the responsible stations or you call me tomorrow (today) morning,” he said.
