Seven arrested in Masvingo protest

Masvingo Bureau
POLICE in Masvingo on Wednesday night arrested seven people following an almost five-hour blockade of all roads by irate residents in the sprawling Mucheke suburb who were protesting over the death of a juvenile who was allegedly knocked  down by a commuter omnibus.
The unnamed juvenile was knocked down near Sisk business centre in Mucheke on Wednesday afternoon after another child was recently knocked down by a different kombi in the same suburb and left with life-threatening injuries. Angry residents from Sisk, Majange, Yeukai, Aphiri and Runyararo West suburbs teamed up and barricaded roads in protest over the kombis which they said had become a menace and threat to life especially to children.

Police were involved in pitched battles with angry residents who had laid siege on most roads leading to the city centre on Wednesday night.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero yesterday said the seven would appear in court soon facing public violence charges.
