The Gweru Circuit High Court has sentenced a 21-year-old woman to seven years in prison for poisoning her seven-month-old daughter with a pesticide.

According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Felistas Mpofu (21), who was 19 at the time, travelled from Mberengwa to Mandava.

She put a pesticide in some milk and gave it to her baby.

The baby was taken to Zvishavane General Hospital after crying persistently.

She later died.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the baby had died from ingesting a toxic substance.

A Good Samaritan who had provided Mpofu with temporary accommodation discovered a feeding bottle with a strong chemical odour among her belongings.

This prompted investigations.

Mpofu told the court that she killed her child as she felt that she could not take care of her properly.
