Sevens Rugby Series in impressive first week

AFTER a blistering start to the Summer Sevens Rugby Series last weekend, the fast-paced action returns to Hartsfield Stadium this weekend.

The summer series got underway last week and showcased the immense talent that Bulawayo has and is being overlooked in most instances.

This was according to Matabeleland Warriors coach Rueben Kumpasa.

He was speaking after the first week of Sevens rugby action at Hartsfield ground which is the home of rugby in Bulawayo.

“We have just come out of the 15s season. We are getting into the summer series. We are having a two-week competition to see what the clubs have and what they need to do to improve.

“After this two-week competition, we will have a sponsored tournament which will have teams from Beitbridge and Plumtree,” said Kumpasa.

He was impressed with the performances in the first week of action which he hopes will continue going into the second round of games. The tournament also gives players the opportunity to prove themselves.

“For a start this is good. You get to see some players who did not excel in the 15s make a name for themselves. The 15s game gives players a chance to express themselves.

“In this format, you get to see a number of rising stars who have great potential. In this competition, they have a chance to prove themselves. We have so much talent in the city which is being overlooked. We hope in the near future the talent we have gets recognition and we have more players called for national duty,” said Kumpasa.
