THE game of rugby is spreading far and wide across all corners of Manicaland Province, and the small farming town of Chipinge has not been left behind.

After the highly successful Super Sevens Tournament held in Mutare recently, Manicaland Rugby Board (MRB) in conjunction with one of its affiliates — Chipinge District Rugby Board — will host a Sevens competition in the south eastern border town tomorrow (Saturday) at Chipinge Junior School.

Some of the teams that are expected to take part in the potentially exciting rugby contest include Chipinge Club, Chimanimani Hurricanes, Eastern Giants, Bateleurs, Rockstars, MSC Juniors, Spartans and Wolves.

MRB chairman, Moss Kapumha said their aim is not to leave any place in the province behind in the wave of rugby talent development.

“As MRB, we are geared to spread the game to other districts and in partnership with Chipinge District Board, we have managed to organise the first Sevens series for 2023.

“This will help their recently established rugby club in Chipinge coached by Diana Mapanga to have game time. The games will be held under the theme: ‘No to drug and substance abuse’.

“We will be marketing the sport within Chipinge District, creating awareness and giving the community entertainment through the game of rugby,” he said.

Kapumha added: “Rugby should be an outlet for youths to while-up their time learning a new sport, skills and expressing themselves in a team environment. A lot of social lessons come from rugby such as solidarity, discipline, honesty and integrity,” said Kapumha.

Kapumha said the initiative will be taken to all other parts of Manicaland Province.

“The next venues of these series will be Watershed Ground in Sakubva on September 9, Makoni Sports Club in Rusape on September 30 and Honde Valley at Hauna Growth Point at the end of November,” said Kapumha.

A fortnight ago, Mutare rugby outfit, Old Crestonians asserted its dominance in Manicaland after becoming the toast of the Manicaland Sevens’ competition held at Mutare Sports Club.

Mutare Sports Club came second in a competition that saw Old Crestonians Two settling for third position. Spartans came fourth.
