ZIMBABWE Cheetahs will launch their 2014 season campaign with the Sevens Summer Series at Old Georgians Sports Club on Saturday afternoon.
The sevens tournament has been known as the Spar Summers 7s Series for the last two years but it will be a low-key event as it is without a title sponsor this year.
It will only feature local teams this time around.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union promised that the tournament will be competitive, an exhibition of the best of local talent.
It will feature two legs one in Harare on Saturday and the second one at Hartsfield Stadium in Bulawayo.
“Eight teams from the north of the country will compete and a high densities schools tournament (from the Harare Region) will be run,” a statement from the ZRU said.
“The Series continues to gather momentum as the six best clubs from the south of the country compete at Hartsfield Ground in Bulawayo, with the action kicking off at 9am.
“Accompanying these clubs will be a high densities schools tournament (from the Bulawayo Region).
“The 7s Summer Series will then conclude with two select sides being selected from the Northern Clubs, one select side from the Southern Clubs and one Barbarians side that will comprise players from both the north and south of the country.
“The four-team tournament will provide the national selectors with a final opportunity to select the Zimbabwe Cheetahs and Zimbabwe Goshawks sides that will compete in the Zimbabwe Invitational 7s Tournament, to be held at Harare Sports Club on the 14th and 15th March.”
The Invitational 7s Tournament is featuring sides from Russia, Georgia, Hong Kong, South Africa and Kenya.
