Severe water crisis chokes Masvingo Teacher’s College

George Maponga in Masvingo

Scores of resident Masvingo Teacher’s College students are spending long hours daily queuing for water at the institution after taps went dry nearly a week ago amid a plea for the city council  to restore supplies.

Students are queuing for scarce water from tanks pumped by two operational boreholes at the institution which are however, overwhelmed by demand from over 300 resident students and staff.

There are reports of desperate students relieving themselves in surrounding bushes as toilets have no running water since nearly a week ago.

College principal Mr Benson Mutambudzi says the two boreholes have been saving the day at the institution noting the inconvenience of students having to queue for water daily as the institution does not have running water.

Mr Mutambudzi confirmed receiving assurances from city council that a burst water pipe in the Morningside suburb behind the institution’s woes was being attended.

Masvingo Teacher’s College has more than 700 day and resident students and pressure for water peaks during the day when the on-campus population swells.
