Pupils at Redbank Secondary School under Khami District in Nyamandlovu staying at a makeshift boarding facility within the school are allegedly engaging in risky sexual behaviour, some in return for food.
The pupils stay at the Presbyterian Church-run school to avoid walking long distances to their villages.
Lack of supervision from the school authorities opened room for wild behaviour at the unofficial boarding facility.
Parents who spoke to B-Metro said former male pupils visit the girlsa a?lodgingsa? at night. The school converted a storeroom into a make-shift boarding facility.
Some girls have been spotted frequenting nearby homesteads in search of a?food for sexa?.
a?It will be difficult for pupils to pass considering that instead of reading, they engage in love affairs. We cannot expect good results from such a school where pupils exploit each other sexually. Sometimes after school they have to go out and beg for food as the school is not responsible for providing them with meals,a? said a parent who declined to be named.
The parent called on the police and Ministry of Education to institute an investigation. Some female pupils are also worried about their predicament.
a?Weare not safe here. Although staying here is convenient for us because of the distance between the school and our homes thereas lack of security. We are vulnerable and wish there could be an elderly person to protect us. We risk being raped out here. Just imagine at night some boys would sneak into our room,a? said a pupil.
The headmaster, a Mr Mlotshwa, declined comment referring all questions to the Provincial Education Director Dan Moyo whose jurisdiction the school falls under.
Moyo said he was not aware of the matter adding that they were going to institute investigations through the office of the district education officer.
