A SEX PEST granddad from Nyamandlovu in Matabeleland North Province appeared in court last week facing three counts of sexually attacking his 11-year-old granddaughter.
The 79-year-old elderly man who cannot be named for legal reasons appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza. He was not asked to plead. He only spoke to confirm his name and surname and the allegations he was facing. He was told he could enlist the services of a lawyer at his own cost or be a self-actor. He was also advised to apply for bail at the High Court. He was remanded in custody to 18 March for the commencement of trial.
The court heard that sometime in January this year on a date not known by the prosecutor the granddad who was sleeping with his wife woke up during the night and tiptoed to his granddaughter’s bedroom. It is said upon arrival he caressed her before he carried out the vile attack on her two times. He returned to join his wife in their bedroom.
The court heard that sometime in January this year on the second occasion the granddad came home in the evening while his wife was not at home and found his granddaughter bathing and allegedly stormed into the bathroom before sexually attacking her.
After the ordeal, he issued death threats at the minor but the girl summoned courage and reported him to her grandmother who dismissed the rape case as lies.
It is alleged that last month on 7 February he came home early and found her granddaughter bathing in her bedroom and carried out the sickening attack on her. After the act, he threatened to kill her, if ever she disclosed the sexual attack to anyone.
The girl revealed the ordeal to a relative who reported it to the police leading to his arrest. This comes after he was remanded out of custody to 20 March for yet another rape case. It is alleged he raped his other granddaughter from the time she was 17 years old until she turned 21. His granddaughter told the court that she was afraid to report him because he threatened to kill him.
