Wesley Madhevere hit his first Zimbabwe Under/25 century at Queens Sports Club on Wednesday in their limited-overs practice match against a Tuskers Select side.
The Under/25’s set the Tuskers’ Select side a target of 337 after scoring 336 runs after 50 overs. In response, the select side comprising players from the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province First League were all out for 106 runs after 28.2 overs.
The Chevrons opening batsman reached 134 off 102 balls before he was caught by Arnold Shara from an Admire Mupembe delivery in over 36.4. The select side won the toss and elected to field with the national Under/25 side stuttering to 39-1 in the seventh over after Definite Mawadza was caught by Bright Phiri after edging Mupembe’s delivery to third man having put 12 runs on the board.
Madhevere steadied the ship for the Under/25’s after being on the crease for 128 minutes. His knock included 13 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 131.3. The young opener tried to punch to mid-off but was caught by Shara. Madhevere was also useful with the ball taking two wickets for 16 runs from four overs. He first took the wicket of James who he bowled before dismissing new batter Dillon Pettican for no runs with the first ball in over 19.2 leaving the Tuskers Select side teetering on 87 runs for 5. Pettican cut his shot to backward point and was caught by Brandon Mavuta.
Young Spencer Magodo had the second-highest runs with 48 from 76 balls and a strike rate of 56.58. He was dismissed by Peter Nyandoro who bowled him after 27.5 overs leaving his side with 152 runs for two wickets.
When Tuskers were put in to bat, they never looked comfortable and lost an early wicket when Mthandazo Moyo was dismissed for 12 runs in just the 3rd over. Moyo lofted his shot to cow corner where he was caught by Alvin Chiradza. Two balls later, Tendai Tapera was caught outside edge by Madhevere who was at short third man for four runs from seven balls.
Tuskers’ early collapse was completed one ball after Tapera left the field when Phiri was caught by Privilege Chesa at mid-on from Arineshto Vhezha’s delivery leaving the Bulayo side on 13 for 3.
Privilege Chesa was the pick of the Under/25’s bowlers plundering 5 wickets for 17 runs from 7.2 overs at an average of 2.32. At the death, Chesa took the wickets of Tawanda Mhora (38), Tinaye Shayamano (15), Petros Sithole (0), Sam Muyambo (0) and Dumoluhle Dube (0) to close the 50-over match.
The national Under/25 team is coached by former Chevrons coach Steve Mangongo who has set his sights on ensuring that Zimbabwe has quality material for the Chevrons ahead of the World Cup which the country hosts in 2027.
