RISING model Shantell Chiguvare has made history after being crowned the first-ever Miss Hippopula Africa, a new cultural pageant aimed at celebrating Zimbabwean identity and unearthing raw talent from local communities.

The pageant finals were held on May 24, 2025, at Hippopula Pub and Grill, a vibrant entertainment hub nestled in Bulawayo’s western suburbs. The ghetto-themed venue transformed into a runway of dreams as culture and fashion collided.

Chiguvare walked away with a US$200 cash prize and a modelling mentorship package aimed at refining her craft and launching her into the professional world. Thandeka Mpofu and Alinda Ncube were crowned first and second princesses, respectively.

The event put a spotlight on diverse Zimbabwean traditions through fashion, language, and performance.

The entertainment line-up kept the crowd on its feet, with high-energy performances from DJ Sweeto, Mzistozz Mfanafuthi, Gosso Msharukwa, Juggernaut, Ellbee Mr Nice Guy, and Mud King, all of whom brought the house down with their sets.

Speaking after the event, Khaya-elihle Pardon, the veteran modelling instructor and founder of the pageant, said Miss Hippopula Africa is here to stay and will be an annual fixture on Africa Day.
“The show was a total success. I’m extremely proud of how everything turned out. Hippopula aims to bring change to the youth through arts, culture, and entertainment,” he said.

He added that future editions would explore even greater inclusivity.
“We’re looking at including male models in the next editions and expanding our reach beyond Bulawayo.”
