Shereni fights ‘destiny assassins’

Low self-esteem, insecurity, inadequacy, inferiority and self-pity are among some of the factors that can affect an individual’s efforts to succeed in life. Many people have the potential to achieve great things in life but limiting factors that are usually mental can act as barriers. It might appear as if overcoming these mental drawbacks is difficult but there are numerous avenues that can lead to victory over such.

Carol Shereni’s new eye-opening book “Rise Above It” is a bank full of insight shedding light on the effects of self-limiting attitudes and how they can be conquered.

It comes as no surprise that the writer is such a powerful motivational mouthpiece considering her achievements.

Shereni holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Financial Services from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Business Administration degree from Oral Roberts University and a Diploma of Practical Ministry from Victory Bible College, among other academic achievements.

Although some of the contents in the book might apply to everyone, the author was targeting women, whom the author says she identifies with.

“After experiencing trauma in my life, I determined to turn my pain into a pulpit and my goal is to inspire you to rise out of the ashes into your unique greatness. I wrote this book with a determination to see the restoration of identity for all women from the prison to the palace,” says Shereni in her introduction.

The author describes self-limiting attitudes as destiny assassins, which needs to be shaken off if one is to reach the prescribed destiny.

The book has simple tips, with positive affirmations that will help individuals develop positivity and make attitude adjustments.

Shereni makes use of her life experiences to drive her point home with great effect considering her interesting life story.

In the chapter where she talks about rising above low self-esteem, she highlights some of the things that drove her to feel belittled by society and how she managed to overcome these obstacles.

After falling victim to verbal abuse as a small girl, with other kids making fun of her physical appearance, the author developed a negative attitude towards life with the belief that she was different somehow.

“I could not alter my DNA or change my facial features, but as a young girl, I was tortured for my uniqueness. I allowed their words to sink down deep in my heart, and I began to believe that there was something wrong with me.

“I internalised their comments and allowed them to grow within me, resulting in low self-esteem that impacted every area of my life.”

Later on in life, Shereni realised that she had to confront her self-esteem demons if she was to conquer her destiny.

In this chapter, she goes on to explore the dangers of low self-esteem and how individuals can build confidence.

Some of the dangers highlighted include weakness in character, self-pity, corrosion of good standards, rejection, manipulation and vulnerability among other things.

The Word of God also plays a pivotal role in the book, with the writer making use of the Bible as a point of reference.

Some of the topics discussed in the book include rising above inadequacy, insecurity, inferiority, rejection and self-pity, among other things.

Shereni managed to dig deeper into these topics, combining real life scenarios with biblical events and characters.

I enjoyed reading this book and by the time I finished reading it, the theory of self-confidence and positive thinking had been rejuvenated within me.

The motivational book has a biographical feel that allows the reader to take a sneak peek into the writer’s life story.
