A security guard at Eureka Gold Mine in Guruve last week accidentally shot an alleged thief after he fired a warning shot to break up a fight between a group of thieves that intended to steal gold ore at the mine.
The fight broke out after the thieves started arguing among themselves three metres from the mine.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe said the incident occurred on August 21, this year at around 2pm.
“Wishmore Musariri (18) from Kambeu Academy under Chief Chipuriro in Guruve, Abedinigo Kafingura (31) from Nhamoyebonde Village in Guruve, and two unidentified men were sitting under a tree approximately three meters away from the Eureka Mine premises in Guruve intending to steal gold ore,” he said.
“Musariri and the two men started kicking and punching Kafingura all over the body and assaulting him with a wooden stick.
“Kafingura ran toward Joseph Bofu, a security guard, who was on duty at Eureka Mine, for help. Bofu, who was armed with a shotgun with serial number 704123P1-010876, which he was using to secure gold ore, fired a warning shot in an attempt to stop the three from assaulting Kafingura and accidentally shot Musariri in the lower right limb.
“Musariri sustained multiple bruises on his lower right leg and was subsequently taken to ZRP Guruve to report the shooting.”
Inspector Mundembe said Musariri was referred to Guruve Hospital, where he was admitted. Meanwhile, Kafingura reported the assault to the police and was also referred to Guruve Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
ZRP Guruve attended the scene, and the shotgun, registered in the name of Rengwa Investments Private Limited Blackshark, was recovered.
