A SHOP attendant who allegedly took advantage of the fact that his employer was his brother-in-law and converted $5 569 to his own use was remanded in custody pending trial.
Francis Chirima (23) who was employed by his brother-in-law, Shingirai Kumbula, as a shop attendant at Evergreen Shop in Hob-house denied the theft charges when he appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Tracy Muzondo.
He was being charged with theft as defined in Section 113(2) (a) or (d) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Public Prosecutor, Mr Fletcher Karombe, alleged that on January 4, 2016, Kumbula tasked his company accountant, Tinashe Goto to carry out end of year stock covering the July 2015 to December 2015 period, which was done during the presence of Chirima.
The report indicated that Chirima had a shortfall of $3 054,85 which he failed to account for.
On July 3, 2016 another stock for the period extending January-June 2016 was done.
The stock which was also conducted in Chirima’s presence had another shortfall of $1 864, 35 was recorded. He failed to account for it.
It was further alleged that on October 5, Goto conducted another stock before Chirima’s work contract was terminated and it was discovered that he had a shortfall of $649 on the July-September period.
“Suspicions, however, arose when Chirima paid $4 500 cash for a residential stand sometime in November,” said Mr Karombe.
Amount prejudiced was $5 569, 15 and nothing was recovered. Chirima was remanded in custody to next Tuesday.
