Asked what the most important day of the year is, anyone would pick Christmas, Easter or probably Heroes’ Day. Unfortunately, only a few would mention Mother’s Day, which is celebrated every year on 10 May in most countries.
Probably because of the little attention it gets, this holiday only comes as an afterthought to many.
For some reason Mother’s Day gets overlooked or down played a bit. There may be commercials all over reminding people to send flowers or buying mum a little something to show love, but where is the real sentiment?
The day should be so much more than a gift, or saying Happy Mother’s day. It is about truly letting our moms and wives know how much they are appreciated and cared for.
Mother’s Day is a very important day to celebrate. Whether we have a mother of our own or not to celebrate with, it is very important to keep this day to recognize women that have made it possible for us to exist, as they play a very important role in our lives.
Motherhood is a job that cannot be equalled. It is work, with long hours, no vacations and no pay.
Mums never stop, they never get a day off and sadly, they are never really rewarded or credited for all they do.
In the end if things do not go the way they are supposed to; then it is mum’s fault, especially in the African culture.
The mother takes all the blame when a child goes wayward, for instance;“Well mum didn’t…,”; “Where was your mother when you did this or “Where is that child’s mother!?”
With that said, being a mum is however one of the most worthwhile jobs there can be. Almost any mother would say that there is no job that is more rewarding. They carry that pride; a feeling which starts the moment they find out that they are pregnant to a point where they will wean their children into adulthood.
Without mothers, the society would hardly amount to much.
One can safely say that communities would be significantly smaller, colder and more ill-mannered.
It is the mothers who nurture the society to love as they will be in their respective homes.
It is through their guidance that individuals learn how to be empathetic and sympathetic to those around them. Mothers carry with them a unique willingness to make sure that everything around them is alright.
This explains why sometimes in public; three or four mothers run to aid a child who would have hurt themselves. Obviously they are all not the child’s mother, but they are always quick to notice a need and somehow have the innate ability to make things right.
Mothers are almost always self sacrificing . . it is in their nature.
It is a trait they acquire when they have a baby.
They will go without just to make sure that their children, husbands and families are well taken care of and have everything they need.
By celebrating Mother’s Day, we are honouring and expressing our gratitude for all they have sacrificed.
Perhaps one of the problems is that society has tried to make Mother’s Day a tribute to women in general. This is one of the greatest errors. We don’t make Father’s Day a tribute to men everywhere, though of course it also does not get the acknowledgement that it should.
This year, on this Mother’s Day take the time to thank your mom, and if you are a father, the mother of our children. Let her know how much she means to you.
While in the end moms believe the greatest reward for all they have done is seeing their children turn into happy successful adults; they could all use a little acknowledgment of love from us along the way. Mothers often go unappreciated and so it remains paramount that we set a day aside when we will make them understand how much they are loved.
After all has been said and done, it can never be over rated to acknowledge the old saying which says: “God could not be everywhere, therefore, he created mothers,” or the famous one by Abraham Lincoln who said, “Everything I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother.”
