Showbiz game-changers’ big month takes shape

LEST we forget!  This should become our chorus as Heroes and Defence Forces holidays draw closer. 

In showbiz, Zimbabwe boasts of game-changers who shaped the creative sector in various arts disciplines. 

In music, which commands a huge following, most artistes will honour their heroes/role models with gigs outside Harare. 

Below are some of the major highlights of the weekend meant to celebrate both our living and departed showbiz gurus:

Chopper Commemorations on cards 

Provincial hero Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu’s legacy is in safe hands. 

His son, Sulumani, is dedicating August shows to Chopper who died on August 14, 2005. 

Tonight, Sulumani will be in action at Cotton Club in Victoria Falls for the first leg of the “Simon Chimbetu Festival”. 

After the Falls gig, Sulumani heads to Bulawayo to entertain his fans at The Palace Hotel. 

On Sunday, he holds a family show at Pamusha Bar & Restaurant in Selous under the same banner.

Ndunge Yut and Jah Master will also perform at the event. 

Sulumani urged old and new fans to embrace the Chopper Legacy. 

“This time around we are holding the Chopper commemorations differently by taking them to other parts of the country. It used to be a Harare and Chegutu affair ,but we have decided to take them countrywide,” he said.

Mhangura honours Dhewa 

Thirteen years after Tongai Moyo’s death, his music is still as beautiful as ever.

His son, Peter, will perform at 7 Million Club in Mhangura in honour of his father. The Young Igwe has managed to keep his late father’s legacy alive. 

“I have a big brand on my shoulders and I know what it means to be leading Utakataka Express. It’s going to be a show with a difference as we are celebrating our hero (Tongai Moyo) who paved the way,” he said.

Young Turks invades Kwekwe 

Holy Ten and Poptain are cruising.

The pair will hold a double at Gulez Gardens in Kwekwe tomorrow, courtesy of Samanyanga Sounds. 

Better known as “Young Turks” in showbiz, the pair is popular with young people.

A celebration of pop culture, tomorrow’s show is set to attract high school learners on holiday. 

Kamusena honours System Tazvida

LeeRoy “Kamusena”  Lunga will remember his former boss System Tazvida with a show at Red Eagle Bar in Ruwa tonight.

Kamusena, who worked with the late Chazezesa Challengers founder, will be supported by  Dedicated “Kerrymore” Musasa and Chisafa Gaffa Queens. 

With all the attention on heroes or role models this month,  Kamusena will be celebrating Tazvida’s legacy in style. 

Chillspot Family’s Midlands affair 

DJ Fantan and his Chillspot Family clique will take care of Kwekwe’s club-goers with a show at City Gate Pub tomorrow.

On Sunday, the hype-man will be in charge at Steak House Pub & Grill in Waterfalls, Harare. 

Complemented by DJ Levels, Ribhe and Ras Caleb, the group will hold another gig at DZ Stadium on Heroes Day.

DJ Fantan will wrap up the weekend schedule with another slot at the Zimbabwe Defence Force Day celebrations scheduled for National Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

Mammoth Zim  dancehall bira in DZ 

Freeman and  Killer T are set to headline the annual ZimDancehall Anniversary at Dzivaresekwa Stadium on Heroes  Holiday.

The event, which celebrates the movement’s success story, is set to attract hordes of fans. 

The top acts taking part in the event comprise Silent Killer, Kinnah, Ricky Fire, Maggikal, Hwinza, Ras Caleb, and the Chillspot Family. 

Etherton Beenie, Abisha Palmer, Merciless Zimbabwe, Cymplex Sound, DJ Fydale, and MC Banso will alternate on the stage.

Newcomers comprising King Rose, Flex H, Buyaka, Libho, and Wastak have been included in the line-up. 

Event organiser Jack Radics said it was all systems go. 

“We have done all the necessary groundwork and this is the only way to honour our heroes supporting the Zimdancehall movement.

“The genre is now creating employment and we need to cherish some of the stars who made it what it is.

“Tight security is guaranteed and we urge fans to come and party with us without fear,” he said. 

Chipfumo makes progress in Fio 

Progress Chipfumo will meet his old and new fans tonight for a date at Joy Centre in Highfield, Harare.

Fellow musician Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria will perform at the same venue tomorrow. On Sunday, Papa Lodza will take care of revellers at the same venue.
