Showgoers enjoy free medical checks

People attending this year’s Zimbabwe Agricultural Show in Harare are happy to be enjoying free medical services at the Ministry of Health and Child Care stand.

The stand has become popular with showgoers and it always has many people seeking to be attended to.

Some of the services on offer include laparoscopy, free HIV testing, family planning, counselling, oral health services as well as cervical cancer screening.

A mental health therapist, Mr Joy Sindingwi, said: “We are doing free screenings for common mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, depending on the situation they face and rate, based on a given situation: is it severe or mild?

“After that, we do some treatment and offer counselling to those who require it. We also talk about drugs and how they affect the mental health of a person.”

Ms Tapiwa Sasha from the pharmacy services said they were educating people on the proper use of antibiotics and stressing the need for people to adhere to their treatment.

“We have results whereby patients do not adhere to taking or finishing their treatment,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries said: “I got screened for cervical cancer here at the show and am now waiting for my results. I would also like to urge other women out there to get screened regularly for cervical cancer.”

Another said: “I got my teeth checked and I also got a lot of information on how to take care of my teeth which I believe is very helpful. I got my eyes checked and went through some tests. The optician prescribed some reading glasses, and I also got them for free, which is commendable.”

Another beneficiary said he was grateful for the services being offered by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

“The staff is very efficient and the cherry on top is that the services are for free,” he said. — Additional reporting by ZBC
