Shurugwi Town Council is seeking $230 000 to equip the new Sebanga Extension Clinic to handle maternal cases. Shurugwi Town Secretary Mr Samson Siziba said council recently completed the construction of the modern clinic in Sebanga Extension that will serve over 6 000 residents.

“We have completed construction of Sebanga Extension Clinic and we now need to equip it and that is why we are seeking $230 000 for the exercise,” he said. “It is our hope that it will offer maternal services as we are currently relying on the Shurugwi District Hospital for maternal services.

“So, we are appealing to partners to assist us so that the project can materialise at the earliest possible time.”
Mr Siziba said Sebanga Extension Clinic would also decongest Makusha Clinic, the only clinic in the urban area.

“The project took off after we realised that we could not expand maternity wards at Makusha Clinic. Due to space constraints we had to build a new clinic,” he said. “The town is also growing and new suburbs require social services, including health.

“According to Government-approved recommendations, the clinic should have a waiting shed, outpatient block, maternity ward, toilets and staff complex and a waiting mothers’ home. We will also be drilling a borehole to complement water supplies.”

Meanwhile, Shurugwi North legislator Cde Ronald Nyathi said his office will solicit for more funds to improve health services in the constituency.

“We are not only looking at the urban set-up,” he said. “People in resettlement areas are still walking over 10 kilometres to access clinics hence some women were resorting to home deliveries.

“The Second Republic remains committed to reducing maternal deaths and the infant mortality rate by increasing access to health services by expecting mothers and infants.”

Government has already started offering free health services to expecting mothers, children under the age of five and the elderly in an endeavour to improve health service delivery.
