BINDURA Municipality is working on building two additional primary schools and a secondary school to ease the pressure on the overpopulated schools in the mining town, says the Mayor, Councillor Carlos Tokyo.
He said the municipality had also constructed Broockdale Primary School, which has a total of eight classrooms, but is not yet open for learners due to economic challenges hampering its completion.
The local authority has six schools.
Addressing women who had gathered for the belated International Women’s Day in Concession recently, Cllr Tokyo said it was every woman’s wish to have their child enrolled at a good school and the municipality would make sure that the northern parts of the town which previously did not have schools get a primary and secondary school.
“Bindura town has a big problem of schools which are overpopulated with the teacher to pupil ratio now too high at 1:60 plus,” he said. “In addition to the already existing six municipal-run schools, we have constructed Broockdale Primary School, which has a total of eight classrooms which is not yet open for learners due to the economic challenges.
“We also have plans to construct Woodbrook Primary School and then construct Cleverhill primary and secondary schools. These (Cleverhill Primary and Secondary) will be accommodated in our next financial budget. We will construct them in the northern suburbs of the town where there are no schools at the moment.”
Cllr Tokyo said the municipality’s only high school is Chipadze, which is overpopulated, and the construction of Cleverhill Secondary School would go a long way in easing the pressure on the school, while at the same time complementing other secondary schools in the town such as Chipindura and Herman Gmeiner high schools.
