Shurugwi Town Council is on an expansion drive that is calculated to help it attain municipal status by 2020, town secretary Mr Solomon Siziba has said. In an interview last week, Mr Siziba said the town was working on installing street lights, traffic control lights, as well as increasing its housing units, among other projects.
“We are targeting to attain municipal status by year 2020,” he said.
“We have a lot of investors with keen interest to work with the council so as to help us achieve our dream and we are very confident that we will achieve it.”
Mr Siziba said in addition to setting aside a significant amount of money for its projects, the local authority also plans to spruce up the town’s image in order to lure investors.
“A number of projects to spruce up our image have been put in place.
“Obviously the major work that needs to be done is to improve on our infrastructure,” he said.
Shurugwi, he said, had also made available a number of commercial and residential stands, with big companies and chain stores expressing interest in taking them up.
“About 2 500 stands have been availed as part of our efforts to clear the housing backlog and to meet the increasing population,” said Mr Siziba.
“We are also in the process of rehabilitating our sewer and water reticulation systems to cater for the increasing population.”
Mr Siziba said council had since completed the construction of a clinic in ZBS suburb.
“We recently completed constructing a clinic at ZBS Extension as residents’ health is one of our priorities,” he said.
“At the moment, the clinic is being equipped and hopefully by the end of the year, it will be open for the public.”
Mr Siziba said council had also availed land for the construction of two schools as part of the town’s expansion plan.
