Shurugwi shopping mall construction begins

THE construction of the $2,5 million Shurugwi Town Shopping Mall has commenced after the council re-engaged the contractor for the project that is set to be an economic game-changer for the small mining town.

Three months ago the town council threatened to repossess a piece of land it had set aside for a three-storey multi-million dollar shopping mall after the contractor inexplicably delayed starting construction work.

Yesterday councillors led by chairperson, Councillor Tsungai Makore and Inductoserve Construction Company director, Mr Solomon Matsa, visited the site as commitment to seeing the project through.

“We are here. We are on the ground and ready to start the project. The earth moving equipment is coming soon. It has been bought,” he said.

Clr Makore said he was happy that the project was back on track adding that Inductoserve, a South African-based construction firm with operations in Zimbabwe, had shown commitment to see the mall up.

“We have re-engaged the contractor and the project has commenced. We felt it was not in the council’s interest to continue to stall development.

“The economic challenges have clearly affected the developers’ plans. This complex is an economic game changer for the town and deserves maximum support from us as council,” he said.

Mr Makore said apart from constructing the complex, the contractor had also put up a polyclinic for the community.

“The developer has constructed a polyclinic which is set to benefit the community. We are now at an advanced stage of securing funds to equip the clinic hence the decision to re-engage the developer,” he said.

The mall comprises a supermarket, three banking halls, 10 shops and mayor’s bar.

Mr Matsa said building materials and equipment to kick start the construction of the mall had been sourced adding that they would be delivered to the site soon.
