Shurugwi woman drowns in well

Sukoluhle Ndlovu Midlands Bureau A 49-year-old widow from Shurugwi drowned after she slipped and fell into a well while fetching water, police have confirmed. Norika Madebwe of Makonese Village under Chief Nhema in Shurugwi is, however, not the first person to drown in the same well. Chief Nhema, who also confirmed the incident which occurred last Wednesday, said the well was becoming a death trap.

“Its not the first time that a villager has drowned in this particular well. Ms Madebwe’s body was found floating in the same well after she went there to fetch water for her garden,” he said. Chief Nhema said the matter was reported to the police in Shurugwi and investigations were under way.

“What I will do as the local traditional leader is to try and conscientise people that this particular well is now becoming a death trap and they should avoid using it even to water their vegetables,” he said.
