BULAWAYO’S busy streets, marketplaces and bus termini are filled with shoppers, commuters and traders every day. Unfortunately, these crowded places also provide opportunities for pickpockets who take advantage of congestion and distractions to steal from unsuspecting members of the public.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has recorded an increase in pickpocketing incidents in the Central Business District. These criminals often work in groups, using tactics such as pushing, creating unnecessary commotion, pretending to offer assistance or deliberately distracting victims while an accomplice steals cellphones, wallets, handbags, cash or other valuables.
You can reduce your risk by remaining alert at all times. Keep your cellphone, wallet and money in secure front pockets or zipped bags. If carrying a handbag, keep it zipped and held firmly in front of your body. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive valuables in public, and where possible, use electronic payment methods instead of carrying cash.
Be cautious of strangers who invade your personal space or attempt to divert your attention. If something does not feel right, move away and seek assistance from people you trust or the nearest police officer.
Should you become a victim of pickpocketing or witness suspicious behaviour, report it immediately. Quick reporting increases the chances of apprehending offenders and recovering stolen property.

Information can also be conveyed anonymously through police suggestion boxes located at police stations. Every report, no matter how small, can help prevent crime and bring offenders to justice.
