A MARANGE man will perform 240 hours of unpaid work after he was convicted of growing 36 plants of dagga.
Aariah Jera was also accused of threatening to kill his brother with an axe after being accused of stealing groceries.
Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi ordered Jera to perform the community service at Zimunya Police Post after convicting him of growing dagga as defined in Section 156 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Principal public prosecutor, Mr Tiriwamambo Kangai said, “On January 30, Rishon Jera, who is an elder brother to Ariah, received a report from Philemon Matemachoni that an unknown person had stolen some groceries from his house. He suspected that Aariah was behind the theft.
“Rishon proceeded to Aariah’s homestead to confront him. However, Aariah denied stealing the groceries. He then grabbed an axe and threatened to strike Rishon with it.
“Rishon ran for dear life. He suspected that Aariah was under the influence of drugs and teamed up with other villagers to search his garden. They discovered 36 plants of dagga,” said Mr Kangai.
The villagers uprooted the dagga plants and went with them to Headman Mafararikwa. A police report was made.
