TRIBUTES continue to pour in for the late media personality Babongile Sikhonjwa, with many hailing him as a game-changer in Zimbabwe’s Creative and Cultural Industries.

Sikhonjwa, fondly known as The Ndebele Rockstar, died on September 21 at the age of 49.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) executive director Napoleon “Napster” Nyathi said the arts fraternity had lost two cultural giants in Sikhonjwa and journalist James Jemwa.

“It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of loss that we learn of the passing of two distinguished arts practitioners, James Jemwa and uBabongile Sikhonjwa. These were not just artistes; they were pillars of our culture, repositories of our stories, and mentors to generations. Their contributions have indelibly shaped the identity of Zimbabwean art. This is a tremendous double blow to our nation’s soul,” said Nyathi.

In a statement, the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) family paid tribute to Sikhonjwa, who won the Outstanding Radio Journalist Award in 2019.

“We join the arts community and the nation in mourning the death of Nama award winner Babongile Sikhonjwa. The multi-talented creative was an all-rounder who excelled as a club and radio DJ, TV producer/presenter, MC, singer, musician, promoter, comedian, and actor. We offer heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Thank you for inspiring many with your talents and gifts,” read the statement.

The Zimbabwe Musicians’ union (ZIMU) described Sikhonjwa as more than just an entertainer.

“He was a true pioneer whose presence lit up every stage, studio, and space he graced. His talent, humour, and warmth touched countless lives and inspired many within and beyond the arts sector. We celebrate his immense contribution to the creative industry and recognise him as a friend to musicians and artists across the nation. His legacy of joy, laughter, and dedication to the growth of Zimbabwean arts will remain with us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said ZIMU.

The Kwantuthu Comedy Festival, which Sikhonjwa helped nurture, also mourned his passing.

“In this time of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children. May they find comfort in the memories and legacy that Babongile leaves behind. The curtain has closed on his act, but his wonderful performance on life’s stage will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Babongile — the Ndebele Rockstar, Bubbles, Mrifithi,” read the statement.
