Friends of the late media personality and arts trailblazer Babongile Sikhonjwa have launched a fundraising initiative to support his family with funeral logistics as preparations for his final send-off continue.
Sikhonjwa, affectionately known as Babo in the entertainment industry, passed away on September 21 at the age of 49, leaving behind a rich legacy as a radio host, MC, comedian, and cultural activist.
A memorial service will be held in his honour at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre on Friday, September 26. After the service, his body will be taken to his rural home in Mlowezi, Insiza District, where it will lie in state before his burial on Saturday, September 27.
His sister, Babusisiwe Bathabile Moyo, confirmed that the family is aware of and has endorsed the fundraising initiative.
“They notified us that they want to raise funds in honour of their friend, and as the family, we have given them the green light to do so,” said Moyo.
One of the organisers of the fundraiser, Qhubani Moyo, explained that Sikhonjwa’s influence stretched far beyond Zimbabwe’s borders, and many of his friends around the world were eager to contribute. A GoFundMe page has been set up, while local well-wishers can also donate via EcoCash or Mukuru on +263 772 748 000 (registered under Qhubani Moyo).
“In our culture, when one passes away, friends and the community contribute whatever they can to assist with the burial arrangements. As friends, we agreed to organise something for our late brother.
“This is our own version of Zibuthe or Incebethu – traditional community initiatives where people come together to support a bereaved family. All the money raised will be handed over directly to the Sikhonjwa family, who have blessed this initiative,” Moyo said.
He said the move was not motivated by financial difficulties on the family’s part, but rather, as a gesture of appreciation for Sikhonjwa’s life and the lasting friendships he nurtured.
Meanwhile, arts practitioner Saimon Mambazo Phiri, who is coordinating the funeral programme, has said preparations are nearing completion.
