SILOBI High School in Ward 10, Umzingwane on Friday received science laboratory equipment worth $180 000 which was bought through the Constituency Development Fund.
Handing over the equipment, Umzingwane Member of Parliament Retired Brigadier General Levi Mayihlome said it was important to complement the Government’s thrust in promoting science and technology in schools to enhance development. The donation included digital multimeters, which are a test tool used to measure two or more electrical value and gas cylinders.
“It is disappointing that our own children from this region fail to make it into our own colleges and universities to do science programmes due to a compromised science background. As such we saw it fit together with the Constituency Development Fund Committee to channel the fund towards promoting science and technology in our schools. We finished off building the clinics and our next port of call is equipping our schools with science equipment. We had identified Dula High school but Government then donated equipment to them,” he said.
Silobi High School has seen its enrolment rising from 194 in 2009 to 423 this year, a development that has been commended as a sign that parents in the community are valuing education. However, the increase in enrolment and Covid-19 challenges, have brought more problems. School Head Mr Zenzo Moyo said the school was still trying to find its feet after disruptions due to Covid-19.
“Pupils now attend schools on a rotational basis, a scenario which is haunting us. This has created inequality in education. For example our Form Ones and Twos come twice a week while our neighbours Matopo, for example, learn every day. This definitely makes the ground uneven. However, the District Development Committee is working on procuring more furniture in an aim to mitigate these challenges,” said Mr Moyo.
He said the equipment will however, improve education at the school. — @nyeve14
