A SURPRISE winner, Simona, romped to victory in the 1 800 metres Champion Fillies Stakes at Borrowdale Park on Sunday beating several pre-race favourites to the finish line. Simona by Gimmethegreenlight (Australia) out of a Western Winter (United States) mare, won the race that had several runners with more experience. Bookmakers gave the sprinter no chance despite her having three titles on her back as they thought Ladies First, Belle Epoque, Wylde Style, and Carla The Rebel would make it to the finish line first.
However, it was Simona who managed to beat Belle Epoque into second place with a winning margin of 1,25 lengths.
Placid Sea come third as pre-race favourite Ladies First, who finished as the runner-up last year, was fourth.
Jarryd Penny rode the winner for Bridget Stidolph yard and the four-year-old filly is owned by the Newbury Racing Syndicate and was bred by Nadeson Park. Belle Epoque of the Kirk Swanson yard had Kyle de Melo on the irons while Wylde Style had Randall Simons.
Last year the 1 800m Champion Fillies Stakes was won by La Carmelita, followed by Ladies First, Betula Uber, Belle Epoque, Dictate and Carla The Rebel.
