BULAWAYO-based arts group, Simunye Simunye, which has over the years specialised in drama and theatre production, has decided to spread its wings by venturing into music. The Tshabalala-based outfit, which began as a dance group before eventually venturing into drama has added marimba to its creative side.

Those who were used to seeing the group using backtracks for their dances will be amazed when they see the group with its own compositions and playing marimba.

Group co-ordinator, Larrington Mudare said they added tap dance and marimba to their creative side.
“We decided to try tap dance and marimba as a way of broadening our works and offering variety for our audiences,” said Mudare.

Simunye Simunye, one of the most sought-after groups in the city, recently clinched a deal with Archers Sports Club. The group will perform at the club every Saturday.

The group, which is one of the longest surviving arts groups in the country, boasts of more than a decade in the showbiz scene.
As the group celebrates its 14th anniversary this year, the nimble footed dancers and musicians have remained unfazed despite losing some of their senior members that include former group director Future Dube, Bruno Nduwa, Matrine Muleya and Tichaona Karuma.

“Over the years, we have concentrated on dance, particularly contemporary and traditional, as well as drama productions but we have shifted our focus to marimba as well. We are looking forward to releasing an album this year,” said Mudare.

Last year, the group produced a number of musical and drama productions namely, Zimbabwe World of Wonders, The Journey of Gringo and Tap Dance.

Mudare said his group had performed at a number of high profile events such as the Sanganai Hlanganani Travel Expo, local musical galas, Ibumba, Intwasa Festivals and the National Arts Merit Awards.

Simunye Simunye, who also work hand in glove with Victory Siyanqoba have made a number of regional tours.
