World number one Jannik Sinner has announced his withdrawal from the Paris Masters, citing a virus as the reason for his decision.
The 23-year-old Italian, who recently triumphed over Carlos Alcaraz to claim the $6 million title at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia on 20 October, expressed his disappointment in a video message shared by tournament organisers.
“I’m very disappointed to tell you that I am not able to play here at this tournament,” Sinner said.
“I came here very early to prepare, but then I felt sick. I have a virus at the moment, which will pass in the next two or three days. Body-wise, I am not ready to compete.”
Sinner, who aims to return to form, added, “I am very sorry for that. I will see you guys in Paris next year. Hopefully, it will be a great year. And this year — without me. Hopefully, I’ll see you next year.”
Frenchman Arthur Cazaux will take Sinner’s place in the tournament draw.
The Paris Masters, which runs from 28 October to 3 November, has also seen the withdrawal of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, adding to the intrigue of the final ATP 1000 event of the year. —Dimsum
