Six dead in Mazowe mine tragedy

SIX artisanal miners died while four others were injured after a tragic accident at Starlake Mine in Mazowe.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident, which occurred around 10AM, on july 18, when a hoist system being used to pull a bucket of miners from a 45-metre-deep shaft suddenly gave way.

Four of the miners died on the spot while two others succumbed to injuries upon admission at Concession District Hospital. The remaining four were injured and are receiving medical attention.

National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations into the cause of the accident are underway.

He also released the names of the deceased, who were identified by their next of kin as:

Sebastian Dzaingwa (33) of Zuze Village, Wezhere, Sanyati

Tawanda Nyandoro (41) of Basaroukwe Village, Gokwe

Edger Magenya (30) of Pinyengwe Village, Kwekwe

Milton Trust Ngonzwe (25) of Bika Village, Nyanga

Elvis Kasaira (38) of Village 97, Mutoko

Abel Majangara (25) of Nyashanu Village, Buhera

The police urged mining operators to ensure safety standards are upheld at all times to prevent similar tragedies.
