The South African Police Service confirmed on Twitter that he was stabbed yesterday and that a woman – believed to be his girlfriend – had been arrested.
“#sapsGP Nkululeko Habedi, aka FLABBA, was stabbed & passed away; a woman is in custody,” the SA Police Service tweeted.
Gauteng police confirmed that the musician was stabbed to death – allegedly by his girlfriend – in the early hours of yesterday morning, in Alexandra.
“At this stage we can confirm that a well-known musician was allegedly stabbed to death,” spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said.
“His girlfriend is in custody and she is expected to appear in court soon.”
South African celebrities, fellow musicians and fans took to social media to express their condolences and shock, as the news of his death broke early yesterday morning.
Habedi, 38, was one of the founding members of Skwatta Kamp, which is largely credited with revolutionising the South African hip-hop industry.
Nkululeko Habedi was born on October 17, 1977, in Orlando West.
Skwatta Kamp rose to fame with their 2001 debut album Skwatta Kampain and have won numerous awards since then.
Two of their albums, Mkhukhu Funkshen and Washumkhukhu each sold in excess of 25, 000 units.
Flabba made headlines when he and fellow Skwatta Kamp member Simphiwe “Bravo” Msimanga were arrested for assault in May 2005 following a brawl outside a nightclub.
He released his debut album, Nkuli vs Flabba, from which the single Isbhamu Somdoko earned him a South African Music Award for best rap album in 2007.
Skwatta Kamp’s fifth album Fair and Skwear was released in 2009.
Flabba’s latest single, Nay’Inkinga, featured JR and was released in December last year. – City Press and Drum.
