Skypper out to revive Makokoba’s arts scene

VERSATILE up-and-coming musician Skypper (real name Proud Solomon Tambu) is a youngster who is out on a mission to reclaim the prowess of Bulawayo’s oldest township, Makokoba which is largely regarded as Zimbabwe’s oasis of arts and culture.

Over the years, Makokoba has churned out legends, Dorothy Masuka, granddaddies of jazz music The Cool Crooners, Beater Mangethe and Lovemore Majaivana. But of late, it seems nothing much is happening, something Skypper wants to correct as he believes there is a lot of talent in that area.

Recently, Skypper released three singles that seek to market the Makokoba township and pave the way for more artistes.

“Last Friday, I released three tracks – Iwe Mudiwa (Afro-pop), Kana Uneni (RnB) and The Big Boys (Club RnB/Rap). The singles are meant to hype up our suburb Makokoba which has of late, not been producing great artistes.

“With these songs, I want to put the spotlight on the township and set a pace too,” said Skypper.

Skypper who is also an actor said he is working on a movie titled Jaws of Death that he hopes to flight on ZBCtv to further boost the township and the country’s film industry.

“I’m also working on my first movie called Jaws of Death where I’m the main actor. My vision is to become a great entertainer and bring a smile to people’s faces. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with renowned and international artistes.

“Other than promoting the Makokoba township, I also want to take the Zimbabwean music and film industry to the next level internationally.”

He said he is going to need support and believes that with the right support and sponsorship, he will be able to elevate Zimbabwe’s arts scene. – @mthabisi_mthire
