DHAKA. — Bangladesh eked out a slender 14-run lead as Zimbabwe dismissed the hosts for 254 shortly before stumps on the second day of the first Test cricket in Dhaka yesterday.
Tinashe Panyangara was the star of the show, finishing with 5-59 – his best return in only his seventh game. At stumps, Zimbabwe were 5 without loss, and Vusi Sibanda (five not out) will continue this morning with Regis Chikabva, who has yet to score.
Zimbabwe kept fighting back with two more wickets to send Bangladesh to tea on 189 for five, still 51 runs adrift.
Mahmudullah (63 – his ninth Test 50) and Mushfiqur Rahim (41 not out) dug in after the loss of Shakib Al Hasan, three overs after the luncheon break, with a 63-run stand for the fifth, wicket.
However, the hosts again failed to consolidate until a break in play, as Mahmudullah was trapped in front by Sikandar Raza for 63, shortly before tea.
Shuvagata Hom – playing in his second test – is on nine at the break with Mushfiqur.
Earlier, Bangladesh went to lunch on 109 for three, trailing the visitors by 148 runs.
Shamsur Rahman was still on his overnight score of eight when, three overs into the day, he drove early at a Tinashe Panyangara (2-31) delivery and lobbed a dolly to Elton Chigumbura at mid-off.
Mahmudullah joined Mominul Haque and the pair looked set for the long haul, adding 63 for the third wicket.
Mominul brought up his sixth test half-century, but in the penultimate over before the break, he made a schoolboy error when he did not run in his bat taking a single and was found short of his crease by a direct hit from Sikandar Raza in the covers. — AFP.
