Small-scale miners council set for launch

Mr Takavarasha resigned from the Zimbabwe Miners’ Federation as chief executive to join ZASMC which promotes subsistence small-scale mining.

According to the council, about 500 000 people in Zimbabwe were involved in artisanal small-scale mining on a full time, seasonal or occasional basis.

Mr Takavarasha said a number of programmes would be rolled out this year to promote growth and development of the sector.

He would not be drawn to divulge further details.

The formation of ZASMC came at a time when Government through the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development was working on regularising activities of artisanal and small-scale miners.

The miners have often been given derogatory terms like “amakorokoza/ otsheketsha” and their activities criminalised with gold from the miners declared illegal and illicitly traded on the black market.

This has deprived the Government of millions in revenue.
