AS the Grade Seven results are expected to be released in early December, parents must begin preparing now — not later. The excitement of seeing your child progress to Form One should not be clouded by stress, confusion or last-minute decisions.
One of the biggest mistakes some parents make is rushing to enrol their child in a school they cannot sustainably afford. Choosing an expensive school for prestige’s sake may lead to an embarrassing situation — where the child is transferred in the second or third term due to failure to pay school fees. This instability can affect the child’s confidence, academic performance and sense of belonging.
Instead, make wise and honest financial decisions. Choose a school where you know you can consistently pay the fees without struggling.
Remember, your child’s success is not determined by how expensive the school is, but by the support, consistency and opportunities they receive.
Start doing your research now. Don’t wait for the results to begin making inquiries. Visit schools, call their offices, speak to the heads and ask for their fee structures, subject combinations, available sports and clubs, academic performance and general school culture. Find out what kind of environment your child will be stepping into. Is it nurturing? Is discipline emphasised? Are learners challenged to grow?
Also, make sure the school offers subjects aligned with your child’s interests and strengths — whether in sciences, arts, practical subjects or sports. Education is not one-size-fits-all.
Importantly, always have a Plan B. Your first-choice school may be oversubscribed, or your child may not meet its cut-off. Having an alternative option prepared will reduce panic and allow for a smoother transition.
Remember, starting Form One on a strong footing sets the tone for your child’s entire high school journey. Make informed, practical and timely choices.
