Smith impresses in Texas

ZIMBABWEAN golfer Travis Smith had a good opening round in the 2018 St. Edward’s Invitational golf tournament at the Onion Creek Club in Texas, United States, on Monday.

The top amateur is playing for Texas A&M International University Men’s Golf team where he is now a senior having joined in 2015.

The 2018 St Edward’s Invitational is hosted by St Edward’s University in the course that measures 6,530 yards with par set at 70.

The Dustdevils, as Smith’s team is known, played 36 holes on day one, and it was the Zimbabwean who led the way.

Smith posted a one-over 141 through two rounds of play having opened the first round with a pair of birdies on holes 10 and 11.

The senior posted a three on the par four 10th before putting for a two on the par three 11th.

Smith opened the front nine with a third birdie, posting a three on the par four first.

A birdie on the par five fifth moved Smith back to even on the day before posting a pair of birdies on eight and nine.

The senior used five birdies in the second round, posting a 73.

Smith birdied holes 12 and 14 before picking up a trio of birdies on the front nine.

Smith posted three of the six front-nine par fours to move into a tie for second overall.
