Soccer referees’ assessors course takes off

THIRTY participants drawn from the country’s 10 provinces are in class for a four-day rescheduled referees’ assessors’ course which kicked off in Bulawayo yesterday.

The programme, which was initially scheduled for August 20-24, is being facilitated by renowned Fifa instructor Carlos Henriques of South Africa and assisted by Zifa referees’ committee vice-chairperson Brighton Mudzamiri.

Referees committee chairperson Bryton Malandule said each province has three representatives attending the course, a demonstration that they want to capacitate officials from all over the country.

The referees’ boss said they are excited that Fifa agreed to reschedule the match assessors’ physical course after failing to get clearance from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).

He hopes the world football governing body will also respond favourably to their request to rearrange the referees’ physical course.

“We’re grateful to Fifa for rescheduling the match assessors’ course which started today in Bulawayo and will run for four days. Mudzamiri is working with Henriques and participants from all 10 provinces will gain invaluable experience.

“We’re also keeping our fingers crossed that Fifa will accord us new dates for the referees’ physical courses that were postponed when sporting activities were barred because of Covid-19,” said Malandule. — @ZililoR
