MASIYE Social Netball League founding member, Joseph Nkomazana has urged stakeholders, particularly city fathers, to consider the plight of the girl child when it comes to setting up sporting facilities.
Speaking on the sidelines of an HIV and Aids netball tournament held at White City Stadium recently, Nkomazana, the director as well as founder of the league said unlike their male counterparts, girls are affected by the shortage of sporting facilities within the communities.
He said such a situation has forced the girl child to fork out a lot of money when travelling to the nearest grounds to play.
“It is very discouraging to note that sporting facilities for the girl child outside schools are not as many as those of their male counterparts.
“This has forced the girls to travel long distances in search of play grounds where they can get practice time.
“Such a scenario does not only affect them in terms of focus as well as preparation but it also drains them financially which ends up frustrating them,” said Nkomazana.
He feels that the netball fraternity, council as well as the nation at large need to put their heads together and help the girl child by providing them with suitable courts which they can play on.
According to Nkomazana, just like their male counterparts if left idle the girls are at risk of indulging in retrogressive behaviour which might ruin their lives at an early age.
Notwithstanding such challenges Nkomazana is happy with the way the girls have applied themselves resulting in some of them catching attention of scouts.
Among those are Beauty Sithole who travelled with the Gems to Liverpool for the Vitality Netball World Cup in July.
